Have you ever served on a jury? I get called to jury duty regularly, but never make it to a trial. I know a lot of people complain about jury duty, but I think it would be interesting to go through the experience, at least once. I covered a major trial years ago for two and a half months and wondered what life must have been like for the jurors...sitting in court every day, and then debating the verdict and passing judgement on someone. What an extraordinary situation! Its not tidy like the programs you see on TV, where everything is wrapped up on an hour. I reported for jury duty this week and waited with a room full of people...there were so many, some had to stand. Its great to see people who take their civic responsibility so seriously. I started taking pictures of items that interested me and thought about our system of justice which provides for a jury of our peers, ordinary people who bring their life experiences to the courthouse and make decisions that affect peoples lives. It gave me another reason to be grateful that I live in America. Just before lunch, our very charming and entertaining jury assembly room clerk, Will, chose 49 random names and I was one of those names to be released...so I headed right to work. I wondered what trial I might have missed. A side note: the Court house needs to get new TV screens...maybe flat screens instead of the ancient models you see in the picture! Anybody want to start a campaign to upgrade that technology!!! Please share with me your jury duty stories right here!
