Have you ever woken up with pain in your neck, upper back, and - TopicsExpress

Have you ever woken up with pain in your neck, upper back, and shoulder and you dont know how it got there? Its much more common than you think. This type of pain can be caused by improper pillow support, lying with your head and neck in a particular position for too long, or sudden movements that cramp or tweak the muscles of the neck and upper back while you are sleeping. Quite often, the upper regions of the trapezius muscle are the areas affected by this type of injury, although its not uncommon to experience a tweak in a prominent neck muscle known as the SCM, or the sternocleidomastoid. The pain is usually present when you turn and/or tilt your head to the side and causes further stress and discomfort the longer it goes untreated. Fortunately, this type of injury can be helped with therapeutic massage. Even with massage, you may still experience some pain and discomfort until the affected muscles have had time to rest and recover... usually 1-3 days depending on the severity. If you or someone you know is suffering from neck or back pain or discomfort, please advise them to seek the help of a licensed massage therapist. In fact, feel free to send them my way! =)
