Have you heard of Pie Corbett? He has done alot of work in the area of story writing and story telling. I use alot of his story telling materials with infants. He has written scripts for most traditional stories and made them simple, repetitive and put visual actions with them. The children become familiar with the story and are able to retell the story independently. It also makes playing with the story (changing the ending, making the good character a bad character etc) really easy as the children are so familiar with it!
