Have you noticed staff wearing different colored lanyards? Have you wondered if the colors mean something? The colored lanyards are one measure that Child, Youth and School Services has put in place for the protection of your children. All staff have to complete background checks and training prior to working alone with your child. The lanyards help us identify who has been vetted through the background check process and can be left alone with a child. A blue lanyard means they are fully cleared. Red means they are under Line of Sight. Green means they are in a support position and do not have the appropriate training to be working in ratio with your child. You may have noticed that the color lanyard staff are wearing has changed frequently. Over the past nine months, a great deal of time and effort has gone into auditing suitability files. Also local checks are repeated every five years. Anytime something comes up on a check, the staff member is placed under Line of Sight until it is appropriately adjudicated. Many times we have put staff back under Line of Sight over the past few months for very minor things such as traffic ticket or a missing document from their file. This is happening throughout the Army right now as we work to improve the quality of our programs for your children. Sometime in the future, we will be replacing lanyards with smocks and shirts.
