Having lunch to day, noticed a cute, elderly couple having lunch. So carefully they cut their McDs hamburger in half, counted out their small bag of fries, one for me, one for you. Two straws in their small drink. Then he got out his wallet, held up a single dollar bill in his hand, trembling a bit. She plucked a little change purse from her pocketbook. Poured the change on the table, and counted it out, not once, but three times. He gathered up the change with his single dollar and left the table. He returns with a small ice cream with chocolate sauce and a bag of sprinkles from the same McDs counter in the food court. He puts a few left over coins on the table. Deliberately puts down two napkins, one for her, one for him and repeats with two spoons. I watched as he struggled to get the top of the ice cream, ready to jump up at any moment to help. Finally success! Pure joy on their faces as they shared that ice cream. She took the first scoop, he the second and so on. The whole time eating my lunch, I couldnt stop thinking and watching them. Carefully sharing, carefully counting, counting, and recounting, making sure they had enough to buy an ice cream. I tossed my half eaten lunch in the trash, I was determined to not let them leave before I could do something. Went up to that McDs counter, and returned to their table. Said hello, and that I noticed how much they were enjoying their ice cream. Told them my grandpa enjoyed eating ice cream, how my husband loves ice cream, how even our dogs get doggie ice cream. Smiles from them. Then I left the card on the table. For them, to enjoy more ice cream. After a heartbeat, she said thank you. Another heartbeat, he said, this is for us? Yes, enjoy. Again he says, youre giving this to us? Yes, enjoy your ice cream and have a good afternoon. I quickly walked away. I wish I could have seen their faces to see how many ice creams they could get. Maybe the next time they wont share their hamburger, fries and drink. Don and I love doing random acts of kindness. Usually we do it in secret, but today couldnt really. I am thankful for all that I have and for parents, teachers, Pat and Norma and everyone who taught me to be kind, show compassion and generous with what I have.
