Having visited Pearl Harbor twice, I still cannot fathom what people have gone through as soldiers nor as civilians living amidst war. My friend Bruce gives an overview of the US beginning involvement in WW II. The numbers are staggering. From Bruce... Seventy three years ago today, 353 Japanese planes launched from 6 aircraft carriers damaged all eight US Naval battleships, sinking four. The Japanese also sank or damaged three cruisers, three destroyers, an anti-aircraft training ship, and one minelayer. 188 U.S. aircraft were destroyed; 2,403 Americans were killed and 1,178 others were wounded. The following day, December 8, the United States declared war on Japan. Domestic support for non-interventionism, which had been strong, disappeared. Clandestine support of Britain was replaced by active alliance. Subsequent operations by the U.S. prompted Germany and Italy to declare war on the U.S. on December 11, which was reciprocated by the U.S. the same day. Thus began US involvement in a war in which civilians killed totaled from 38 to 55 million, including 19 to 25 million from war-related disease and famine. Total military dead: from 22 to 25 million, including deaths in captivity of about 5 million prisoners of war. Let us to remember to never forget. Wars are insanity. a calming mix for all of you...
