Hawaii blog day 1: 9:17am Made it through security without much issue. Nobody said anything stupid; by stupid and by nobody I mean myself and the things I usually say. 11:16am We boarded the plane an hour and a half ago, but the plane to Honolulu broke down so they packed our plane with all the Honolulu people and we are sitting on the tarmac twiddling our thumbs. My thumbs are tired. Switching to Hawaii time now: 2:07pm Cut my arm on the seatbelt? Really? Ouch. It burns us [in Gollum voice]. 2:25pm Landed, got baggage and went to find the rental van. Tulloss family found theirs first. My van was located, but key was not where it was supposed to be. Called the company and they said the key was in the gas tank door. Nope. Checked the viser, checked the ash tray, felt under the seat and checked the gas tank door again. No key. Getting frustrated. Called again and they said the key was under the drivers seat. Checked again. Yes...way under the seat. Okay, now how do I get out of this parking lot. OH good, I have to literally pay to get out of the parking lot that they parked the van in. I didnt park it here. The lady at the gate has no sympathy. What is the Hawaiin word for #!*? 4:07pm Got to the hotel. Iselle is starting to visit us with a little rain and wind. Resort is gorgeous. The Tullos family van is stuck in park. Stuck. No go. Stuck in the middle of the breezeway at the resort. 4:17pm Van still stuck, but the resort engineer called his mechanic and he got it into drive. 5:16pm Gone to Safeway in our van. Tullos van is back into park and is done not parking. Mechanic from the rental company would come help except the road between there and here is now closed because of the storm. Gosh, one little hurricane and now the mechanic cant come? How is that our problem. Okay, maybe he has a point. 5.33pm We were told that the stores were being emptied of all things necessary in advance of the end of the world. Not true. Big run on beer, but everything else is available. Prices are outrageous, but not because of the hurricane; because we are in smack dab in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and everything is expensive. Cept coconuts; you can get them on the trees. 6:14pm The hotel gave us an updated version of the earlier hurricane warning. It states we have glow sticks for your convenience. We will issue them from the lobby between 5 and 9pm. Use them sparingly, as we have another hurricane close behind. Unfortunately, we are anticipating a power outage sometime during the storm. The brunt of the storm may hit at any time during the night. In the event that the hurricane intensifies during the night and ocean surges are more threatening...[whats with the ominous …?] we will notifiy you to evacuate your unit and either move to a higher floor or go to shelter.” Good, an end of the world wake up call! 6:21pm TSA opened our medical equipment suitcase and Karmas sleeping wedge is missing. Nice. And of course they are closed now. Just as well; the road between here and there is closed because of the storm, as we have been informed by the mechanic. What is the Hawaiin word for...oh wait, I already asked that. 7:13pm Arm stings, hips burn and wow, that is the worst gluten free crust ever. What on earth did they do to that crust? I have met the enemy and the enemy is that gluten free pizza crust. 7:19pm Coriana is freaking out about the weather as only she can. My brother suggested that I tell her the island might tip over. She is more freaked out now and I cant tell if she really believed that. Feel bad. 7:21pm Oh right, we are 3 hours behind. Patriots game, Seahawks game, Mariners game all over already.
