Hazardous Materials Event Update On August 15, 2013 the New Brighton Department of Public Safety and the North Suburban Hazardous Materials Response Team-NSHM (comprised of the New Brighton, Lake Johanna, Vadnais Heights, and Falcon Heights Fire Departments) were requested to provide mutual aid to the City of Saint Anthony for a report of a chemical leak from a truck. NSHM hazardous materials personnel determined the truck had suffered from a loss of chemical containment resulting in the loss of muriatic acid. Crews conducted atmospheric monitoring and determined NO HAZARD existed in any area beyond the immediate area of the affected truck. Although there was a foul odor associated with the chemical loss, the airborne concentrations were not hazardous and there was no danger to New Brighton residents. Due to the foul odor associated with the chemical residents in the immediate area were asked to remain indoors. NSHM crews working in partnership with Minneapolis Fire Department Hazardous Materials Crews were able stabilize the incident by stopping the leak and isolating the chemical lost to an area adjacent to the affected truck. A clean-up contractor arrived on scene under the guidance of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Minnesota Department of Transportation, and United States Department of Transportation, has begun to clean up the area and traffic is anticipated to return to normal in the next few hours.
