Hazrat Owais al-Qarni (May Allah Be Pleased With Him) led a very simple and lonely life, spending most of his time in worship and the remaining tending and caring for his aged mother who was blind. he was very obedient and never went against the wishes of his mother his clothing consisted of a pyjama and a blanket make from camels hair food was never important, he would go on for days eating only dates and fasting. People considered him mad, they teased and pelted stones at him when children stoned him, he would tell them to throw small stones at him so that he could continue to worship Allah. Hazrat Owais al-Qarni (May Allah Be Pleased With Him) had emmense Love for the Holy Prophet s.a.w and his Beloved Sunnah. Despite living during the time of The Holy Prophet s.a.w, Owais al-Qarni (r.a) never had the fortune of seeing The Holy Prophet s.a.w, but the Messenger himself refers to him as the Best of the Tabieen (Followers of the Companions of the Prophet s.a.w) Owais al-Qarni (r.a) heard that in the battle of Uhud, RasoolAllah s.a.w , lost a tooth, and Hazrat Owais (r.a) could not stop crying knowing his Beloved was hurt, he kept wondering what tooth of the Prophets s.a.w, was broken in Uhud, and he wanted to feel the pain RasoolAllah s.a.w felt, so he pulled out his front tooth, then he thought, no the Prophet s.a.w , must have lost this tooth, so he pulled out another tooth, then he thought maybe it was this tooth, and in the process he ended up pulling out all his teeth. Once Owais al-Qarni (r.a) asked his mothers permission to visit Allahs Messenger s.a.w, and she said: You have my permission to go, see him once, and come straight back. If the Messenger is at home, you may meet with him; if not, come straight back here. Owais al-Qarni (r.a) made a journey of three months on foot, from the Yemen to Madinah. When he reached RasoolAllah s.a.w s house, he knocked on the door and Syedina Aisha (Radiallahu anha), wife of the Chosen Prophet opened the door. She told him that RasoolAllah s.a.w was in the Masjid. (despite the masjid only being few feet from the house) Owais al-Qarni (Radiallahu anhu) remembered his promise to his mother and replied: Please convey my salaams to my Beloved RasoolAllah s.a.w. Kindly inform him that Owais came from the Yemen, did not find him at home, and is returning to the Yemen, since he does not have permission from his mother to meet him in the mosque. When RasoolAllah s.a.w came home from the mosque, he found the radiance of Owais in his house. Syedina Aisha (Radiallahu anha) told him what had happened, and conveyed Owais salutations. His blessed eyes looked towards Yemen and the blessed Prophet said: The fragrance of our friend is reaching us. The Holy Prophet s.a.w said Owais will come back to Madina to meet me, but we will not meet physically, for I shall then be united with my Lord During Hazrath Umars (Radiallahu anhu) Caliphate. Hazrath Ali and Umar (Radiallahu anhu ajmain) approached Hazrath Owais al- Qarni (Radiallahu anhu), greeted him, conveyed the greetings of the Messenger s.a.w, and presented him with his blessed cloak. But he was reluctant to accept. Surely there is some mistake! he exclaimed, in his desire to hide himself. Seeing the light upon his hand, however, they cried: You are the saint described to us by Allahs Messenger s.a.w, for he told us about the light on your hand. They also reported to him the wish of the blessed Messenger that he should pray for the Ummah of Muhammad s.a.w. Hazrath Owais al-Qarni (Radiallahu anhu) rubbed the blessed cloak over his face and eyes and kissed it. Then he asked to be left alone. When he was alone he held the cloak and began to pray: 0 Allah this cloak is the cloak of Your beloved Messenger. He has presented it to me, but I refuse to wear it unless You pardon the Ummah of Muhammad s.a.w . He then repeated his prayer in exactly the same words. As he was about to repeat his prayer a third time, Hazrath Ali and Umar (Radiallahu anhu ajmain) came beside him. He cried: Oh, you came too soon! Upon my first supplication, Allah granted me forgiveness for one third of the Ummah; on my second, He forgave two- thirds of the Ummah. In my third request I was pleading for pardon for the entire Ummah of Muhammad s.a.w - then you came along! Those who serve their mothers with love will InshAllah be resurrected with Hazrath Owais al-Qarni (Radiallahu anhu)
