Hazy skies on Monday courtesy of forest fires burning in the west: Smoke from wild fires in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho is spreading into the northern Plains. The early morning skies over the Black Hills region were brown with the high level plumes of smoke. August 11, 2013 “Extreme burning conditions in Idaho caused wildfires to burn thousands of acres again yesterday. The Pony Complex increased by more than 22,000 acres and the Elk fire increased by 10,800 acres. Firefighters are making significant progress on the wildfires in Oregon and estimate a few will be contained within a couple days. Elsewhere, two new large fires were reported, one in Washington and one in Wyoming.” nifc.gov/fireInfo/nfn.htm The NOAA Office of Satellite and Product Operations provides the Hazard Mapping System image below which shows the plume of forest fire smoke as detected by geosynchronous satellites. Upper level winds have carried smoke from the fires in the Pacific Northwest into the Dakotas this morning.
