He Was Bombed 27 Years Ago Today But We Will Remember Him Dele Giwa was born on 16th March 1947 into a poor family, from this humble, impoverished beginning, he grew up determined to relinquish poverty. He travelled to the USA in 1971 in search of greener pastures and through sheer determination, he achieved the success he craved for. He bagged a degree in English at the Brooklyn College, he later proceeded to Fordham University for his masters degree in Public Communications. Dele Giwa returned to Nigeria in 1979 to join Daily Times. His determination and brilliancy soon earned him deserved recognition as chief MKO Abiola made him pioneering editor of the then newly founded Sunday Concord in 1980. He later left to found the famous Newswatch in 1984. His continuous progression brought him fame and powerful connections with people in power, although he relished this opportunity, he didn’t forget what it was to be poor as he was constantly writing about the ills in the society. The Newswatch magazine published a cover story titled “Power Games” Dele was accused of trying to plan a socialist revolution, many other incidents that the bold Dele Giwa got involved in including the speculated spiel that Dele Giwa was about to publish the greatest story of his life which would have exposed Mariam Babangida and her involvement in shady deals. This would include video evidence to further elaborate his story. At a point, Dele Giwa said he believed some folks were after his life and that he might be assassinated. Dele Giwa was said to be at home at his residence, 25 Talabi Street, Ikeja in Lagos, and was about to eat a meal when his son, Billy Giwa brought a large brown envelope addressed to him. Mr Giwa must have thought the unusual parcel was an official letter from the government or from the then head of state Rtd Gen. IBB because the letter was reported to have had the official government’s seal. Two men who had delivered the letter was seen in a Peugeot at Dele Giwa’s home. One of the men was once purported to be former Lagos military governor, Buba Marwa from the account of Dr Ogunade. Anyway, no sooner had he opened the parcel than he was severely blown away, the bomb lacerated his body. He was rushed to a hospital where he later died on Sunday 19th October 1986. The Nigerian people have unanimously accused former head of state, Gen. IBB of the death of Dele Giwa. He has not been charged although he was once invited to the Oputa panel but refused to turn up. Dele Giwa’s lawyer, Late Gani Fawehinmi had done everything possible to charge Gen. IBB but proved abortive as some folks are untouchable in Nigeria. Dele giwa’s peculiar death appears to be one of the longest murder cases yet to be unravelled in the history of Nigeria. He is among the long list of Yoruba people mysteriously assassinated by supposedly non Yoruba mafias in Nigeria.
