“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, ‘My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’” (Psalm 91:1-2 ESV) Early this morning I awoke to the absolute silence of the Appalachian Mountains. We are in Christ Mount retreat center this week with the Fellowship of Christian Firefighters. As we spend hours each day in fellowship with old friends, the stories of God’s goodness and protection proliferate. One of the guys is a West Virginia Arson officer, who lives on the ragged edge of life. Others are big city firefighters. Everyone has seen violence, death and destruction firsthand. For this reason we all cling the closer to our Mighty God, we “dwell in the shelter of the Most High.” As testimonies spill out over long lunches on the open-air porch, we affirm the assurance of the psalmist, who wrote: “Because you have made the LORD your dwelling place—he Most High, who is my refuge—no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” (Psalm 91:9-11 ESV)
