Headed to Kentucky or Holiday World via I-65 this afternoon or Sunday? Or, are you headed to Indianapolis from southern Indiana? Expect long delays this afternoon and Sunday. Contractors for INDOT will accelerate their efforts by adding crews and working through the weekend along I-65 between Seymour and Scottsburg—weather permitting. INDOT officials say traffic back-ups could create significant delays. This weekend’s accelerated work schedule—and another acceleration weekend slated for July—is expected to shorten I-65’s construction timeline-to-completion by six to eight weeks. Instead of ceasing operations at 1 p.m. today for a construction hiatus though 7 p.m. Sunday, personnel for prime contractor John R. Jurgensen Company and several subcontractors will return to the I-65 worksite to labor ‘round-the-clock continuously through next Friday (JUNE 27) at 1 p.m. There will be simultaneous lane closures at a number of locations—both northbound and southbound—between mile markers 52.0 and 29.0. Closures include: • THIS EVENING—I-65 northbound left lane at mile marker 32.0 • SUNDAY EVENING—I-65 southbound right lane at mile marker 47.0 and 41.0 • U.S. 31 to Southbound I-65 entrance ramp (Exit 36/Crothersville) • State Road 250 to Southbound I-65 entrance ramp (Exit 41/Uniontown) • Lane closures for milling and paving at various locations INDOT officials anticipate traffic delays and stoppages with queues extending for several miles today and Sunday afternoons. Today, traffic queues—both northbound and southbound—are expected to peak between 3 and 7 p.m. On Sunday, I-65 northbound queues will be significant between 2 and 10 p.m.—with traffic backing up as far as seven miles during peak hours from 6 to 8 p.m. U.S. Highway 31, paralleling I-65, will also experience heavy congestion during Friday and Sunday afternoon travel times. This $54.7 million I-65 Seymour District pavement project will have renovated 21 lane miles of pavement and rehabilitated 20 bridges between State Road 56 in Scott County and U.S. 50 in Jackson County when completed.
