Do you want to know how you can support them to ensure they secure better health outcomes? 25 March 2014 10.30 am - 2.00pm Piney Lakes Environmental Education Centre, Leach Highway (Near Murdoch Drive), Winthrop. Online Registration: ddc.org.au/new-events/ Light lunch will be provided. Information: [email protected] or 9420 7230 (exc Wed) It is well recognised that one of the most vulnerable groups of people who access health services are people with developmental disabilities including intellectual disabilities. It is also well understood that families play a key advocacy role in supporting people with developmental disabilities in relation to their health. But are we supporting families and people with developmental disabilities to be effective health advocates? Developmental Disability WA is pleased to welcome Dr George Jesien who recently served as the executive director of the Assoc. of University Centres on Disabilities (AUCD) in the USA. AUCD is a network of over 80 interdisciplinary university centers that conduct research, professional education and services for people with developmental disabilities across the life span. Dr Jesien is in WA to talk about what has been achieved in the US in health policy and health outcomes for people with developmental and intellectual disability. Dr Jesien will explore the critical role of parent advocacy, self-advocacy, family support, person-centered planning, sibling support and policy advocacy in these developments. Dr Jesien will also speak about how these forms of advocacy and support have been utilised by the AUCD network to improve the lives of people with developmental disabilities and their families. Following Dr Jesien’s presentation and a light lunch, Developmental Disability WA will hold an interactive forum to discuss what it would take to support greater health advocacy and better health outcomes in Western Australia. Dr Jesien’s visit has been supported by: Mental Health Commission, Curtin University, Disability Services Commission
