Health update: Ok I have never done one of these - a health update. Nothing like the present to change that. I have been suffering with a chronic sinus infection that has lasted for well over a year, maybe two. At first I thought it was hay fever, ichy eyes, puffy eyes, sneezing, constant congestion, and coughing. I took western medicine but I didnt like the foggy head-achy feeling I got. I took Tibetan medicine and it worked really well, it kept me clear and I actually felt better. The moment I didnt take my medicine, I was sick again. Then I remember a couple of experiences I had while bicycle touring. I had spent eighteen months cycling in Southeast Asia and eating mostly rice and vegetables – and I felt fine. Then I flew to Australia where I stayed with friends of a dear friend Richard. One afternoon we rode through the Adelaide botanical garden and I was hit with an allergic reaction that almost stopped my breath. I couldn’t breathe, my sinuses swelled, and my chest was filled with congestion instantly. I thought I had a reaction to some kind of plant pollen. A year later I was in New Zealand and I stayed with a family in Wellington. The woman of the house quickly told me that she and her daughter were just diagnosed with Celiac disease and we would not be eating any gluten for the next four days. “Are you ok with that,” she asked. “Sure I am flexible.” I had been suffering with body fatigue so a few days off the bike and a change of diet would do me good. The results were amazing, I shrunk two inches in my midsection in four days. Wow maybe I am gluten intolerant. As a cyclist, I continued to eat gluten and ride. How else do I pedal that machine forward? Then when I stopped cycling it hit me hard. A constant sinus infection. Still it took some time to figure out that it was wheat. So now I have cut out wheat from my diet. The results are amazing, just like when I was in New Zealand. I have been in denial of my wheat intolerance for years. I can’t deny it any longer. Turns out wheat intolerance can cause all kinds of trouble as noted here webmd/digestive-disorders/celiac-disease/celiac-disease So if you are tired of seeing doctors Darlene Cohagan, try a few days off of gluten and see what your body tells you. I can tell you this, now that I am going gluten free, it’s a daily struggle, I am always hungry. It reminds me of my riding days. So if anyone has any suggestions on what is good to eat – gluten free. I am listening.
