Heard about the 6 bike thefts on campus. It would be so easy for the state to make it a felony with a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years. Problem. Solved. Just with one sentence added to the theft statute. You never know which ones (like mine) have an embedded GPS chip somewhere. The best way to stop a premeditated crime is to ensure that that costs far outweigh the benefits. If stealing a $300 bike leads to 2 decades in prison, few would ever attempt it, and the harsh sentence would rarely, if ever, have to be carried out.
