Heard this on NPR, too.. IRS will NOT call you. Theyll send a letter according to NPR. Apparently scammers using last 4 digits of social security number to imply they know you. I wondered how long that would take to become a scam with everyone asking for your last 4 digits as verification on financial things! Lets see.. the first 3 are based on area where you were born, Varies some, I think, by year, but there are tables of those ranges, I think. You give everyone in the world the last 4. Cant be too long before people start working on the last 2. 1 in 100 chance! Lots better than lottery! We may all find that someone already collected our income tax refund within the next few years. Luckily, the way the social security administration works, apparently an infinite number of people can collect the same refund! And the IRS does not check to see if someone already filed on a given social security number nor do they check the address filed. In one report there were questions about how the IRS sent thousands of refunds to one address. The director of IRS (I think) said they could not control that unless a law was passed!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Duh, basic administration would seem to require noticing if one address had more than say 2, or 20, or 200, or at least when it got to 1000! Or possibly even more than you got back because the W2 info does not get to the IRS till nearly April, approximately! The social security administration has to massage the data first??!!!
