Hearing from God “After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper”. (1 Kings 19:12 NIV) Many times, we expect the word of God to come to us in a dramatic form; to hear our names called out in the middle of the night like Samuel did, to hear an animal speak as in the case of Balaam or better still, very prevalent these days, to be given a word of knowledge or revelation from a prophet or man of God. However, our God is a not a “one-way” God. He is a never changing God but dynamic in his ways. He knows us individually and personally and so knows the most appropriate manner to get his word across to us. In the introductory verse, Elijah was waiting to hear God’s voice after calling fire from heaven, killing the Baal prophets and had ran into hiding afraid for his life because Queen Jezebel sought to kill him. Elijah had been exposed to it all; the miracles, the earthquake and the fire. Thus when the Lord wanted to get his word to him and calm his fears, he chose a gentle whisper. The Lord knows you by name (Jeremiah 1:5) and knows how to get you to hear him. You can hear him because he has given you the power and the right to become a child of God (1 John 1:12). It is possible to hear him because he has given you his Spirit of truth, the Holy Spirit. He can speak to you through the Bible, a song, your environment and when you still your soul in his presence, you can hear him speak to your heart. How do you know you are hearing from him? The Holy Spirit will testify with your spirit, his word in your life.(Heb 10:15). He has given you his word on it; Jeremiah 29:13(NIV) – “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart”. All you need to do is seek him and you shall surely find and hear from him...Amen!
