Heather Allan will be joining me on stage to perform Obsession for the first time in over 20 years at Mallorca Lees 1994 Rave in 69 Below, Glasgow (22nd November 2014). Everyone knows how emotional I get, this time its going to be crazy ! The story behind Obsession. I wrote the lyrics on the back of a small pieces of paper at my work one Monday morning after gigging and raving all weekend. It wasnt about someone , it was more about something, I was trying to explain the magical feelings I shared with fellow ravers on sweaty dance floors, muddy fields, warehouse, tents, clubs and house all over the UK and even tho I didnt know it at the time, pretty much the rest of the world ! Obsession became the A side of the first ever Ultra-Sonic 12 released on Clubscene Records in 1992. We put the music together in Rodger Hughes parents dinning room, the inspiration came after several nights Raving in the BCM, Mallorca, Spain (my first holiday abroad). We recorded ruff vocal takes with Heather ( who was 16 at the time) thru my head set mic, we didmt even have a proper microphone . Driving Heather back home we all listened to the track totally buzzing, I remeber my mate David Oliver telling me, this could get played on Top Of The Pops ! lol We intended to record the final mix at Apoolo studios but that got flooded so the engineer Andy Haldane Productions booked Pet Sounds (Wet Wet Wets studio) so the session could go ahead. I am sure it was also Andy that had suggested Heather perform the vocals for the track in the first place as we had never met before. Rodger and I filled our cars (Ford Escort / Capri) with our keyboards, samplers and drum machines and drove to Glasgow to set up our equipment in a REAL recording studio, the first time we had ever seen one that wasnt on the TV ! We already had the song sequenced on Rodgers Yamaha v50, the piano and flute sounds were from a Roland D-10 and the drums were from a Roland R-8 drum machine I borrowed of my friend Tahir Ramzan (he had a TR-909 memory card for it). The acid line was from a very temperamental Roland Jupiter 6 we bought from an old hippie - had I not instead that we spent more time on it, the track wouldnt have had that sound, because we couldnt re-create it in the studio until the very last minute, which was driving Andy & Rodger mental. The Akai s950 was where I sampled the drum loops from some rave records I had and the vocal COME ON DANCE WITH ME was the hook we needed to link each section of the track. Andy Haldane got the very best from Heather, we didnt know how to explain what we wanted but he knew from our vocal demos where we were going and stacked harmonies and Ohhhs and Ahhhs together to make Heathers vocals sore throughout the track which you all know. So yes I am excited about performing it live with Heather, the original singer back doing what she nailed all those years ago. I am still good friends with Andy to this very day, he is still the guy I turn to when I am recording vocals / guitars. Heathers just as crazy as bubbly as she was back in the day.
