Heidegger’s Black Notebooks Conference... WHERE: The Graduate Center 365 Fifth Avenue ROOM: Elebash Recital Hall WHEN: September 12, 2014: 9:30 AM-6:30 PM ADMISSION: Free; first-come, first-served Description Heidegger intended the Black Notebooks, which were recently published in Germany, as the culminating achievement of his 102-volume Collected Works edition. They represent, among other things, a stark reaffirmation of his philosophical commitment to National Socialism – and, as such, a point of no return for Heidegger scholarship. But what the Black Notebooks also disturbingly reveal is Heidegger’s obsession with “World Jewry” in the most negative and cliché-ridden terms: as a pivotal source of cultural and social dissolution that must be eliminated in order to realize National Socialism’s “inner truth and greatness” – as Heidegger himself put it in 1935. How, then, should one go about resolving the conundrum of a great thinker who remained entirely convinced that the Nazi regime, with its unbridled racism and exterminationist militarism, represented an adequate solution to the “decline of the West”? On Thursday, September 11 at 6:30 pm, there will be a screening of Only a God Can Save Us—a documentary by Jeffrey van Davis on Heidegger’s philosophy and his relationship to Nazism; to be followed by a panel discussion. Friday, September 12: 9:30: Opening Remarks: Richard Wolin 10:00 – 12:00 Karsten Harries (Yale University): “Nostalgia, Spite, and the Truth of Being” Steven Crowell (Rice University): “Reading Heidegger’s Black Notebooks” 12:00 – 1:00 Lunch Break 1:00 – 3:00 Peter Trawny (University of Wuppertal): “Heidegger and the Myth of a Jewish World Conspiracy” Sidonie Kellerer (University of Cologne): “Heidegger’s ‘Will to Power’ in the Black Notebooks” 3:00 Break 3:15 – 5:15 Emmanuel Faye (University of Rouen): “Anti-Semitism and Extermination: Heidegger, the Collected Works, and the Black Notebooks” Thomas Sheehan (Stanford University): “Heidegger: The Greatest Philosopher of the Twentieth Century?” 5:15 – 5:30 Break 5:30 - 6:30 Concluding Remarks: Richard Wolin Paper Titles: Crowell, “Reading Heidegger’s Black Notebooks” Kellerer, “Heidegger’s ‘Will to Power’ in the Black Notebooks” Trawny, “Heidegger and the Myth of a Jewish World Conspiracy” Faye: “Anti-Semitism and Extermination: Heidegger, the Collected Works, and the Black Notebooks” Sheehan, “Heidegger: The Greatest Philosopher of the Twentieth Century?” Harries, “Nostalgia, Spite, and the Truth of Being” - See more at: gc.cuny.edu/Public-Programming/Calendar/Detail?id=26766#sthash.FxPqaEAH.dpuf
