Hello All! So I was having a real bad day today and got up the strength to check my mailbox & received some news to cheer me up a little. Bear with me, this is tough! On behalf of the Mid-west Transplant Network,We would like to express our sincere sympathy to you & your family on the sudden loss of your wife & Loved one, Vicki,The following organs & tissues were recovered for transplantation; Your wifes Heart recipient is a 54 yr. old from the southwest region of the U.S.A., Prior to transplant the recipient suffered from a condition that causes the weakening of the heart muscle, which made it difficult to do simple daily activities. The recipient has been on the transplant list for 11 days. Unfortunately, I do not have a follow up at this time. Your wife also gave a 67 yr. old woman from the Midwest a second chance @ life. She suffered from a desease that caused her Kidneys to fail, making it impossible to remove waste from her body. She had been receiving dialysis treatments for 4 1/2 yrs. & was on the list for 3 yrs. The recipients new Kidney had immediate function & she has been discharged from the hospital in stable condition! The recipient is a retired environmental engineer w/ 2 sons, ages 39 & 36... Vickis other Kidney recipient is a 52 yr. old woman from the Midwest. She too suffered from this disease. She had been receiving dialysis for a year & a 1/2 & was on the transplant list for 80 days. The recipient had immediate function of her new Kidney & has been discharged from the hospital in stable condition to continue her recovery @ home! Due to her health she is unable to work but she was previously a medical aide. She has been married for 6 yrs.& has 2 children, 3 step children, 27grandchildren, & 3 Great grandchildren. (WOW). She would like you to know she is very appreciative; She looks forward to having a more normal life & no longer needs dialysis treatments !!! Vickis Liver recipient is a 34 yr. old woman from the Midwest. She requires a transplant due to a disease that causes inflammation of the Liver. She had been waiting for 2 days. Currently, I do not have a follow up for this recipient. (yet). Our tissue recovery staff was able to recover grafts of bone & associated connective tissue. Bone grafts are transplanted in patients who have suffered different types of injuries that need surgery in order to heal. Types of procedures include, Orthopedic, Neurological, & reconstructive applications. Bone grafts are used to replace diseased bone in individuals suffering from bone cancer. As many as 50 (yes 50) individuals may benefit from this gift. One of your wifes corneas was recovered for the purpose of transplantation. Transplantation of this type gives the recipient a better quality of life w/ improved vision. Microscopic examination determined that the other cornea did not meet the criteria for transplantation & will be used for research. Again we would like to express our sympathy & gratitude on behalf of these recipients & their families. I know words can not eliminate the pain you & your family must feel, but I hope that you will gain some comfort in knowing that your wife has given these precious gifts. Thank you for allowing me to walk just a few steps with you as you begin this unexpected journey in your lives. For further assistance or questions from you or your family, Please feel free to call me @ 913-262-1668 Sincerely, Rev. Isaac Ruffin
