Hello Cousins, what a great group! Henry and Luna were the largest branch on the family tree! A little information for Katherine Hindermann Montag her parents were: Johann Josef Joseph Hindermann b.Jan 21 1832 Prussia Germany –d. Feb 22 1880 in Paris Township Wisconsin and Anna Barbara Regina Hindermann (Weiderholt) b. June 3 1823 in Prussia Germany – d.Nov 23 1892 in Dickeyville Wisconsin. This couple was one of the first Hinderman ancestors to step foot on American soil arriving in the United States aboard the O. Thyen. They boarded in Bremen as steerage sometime in May 1857 and after a 4 to 6 week journey they landed in New Orleans Louisiana June 2, 1857. Their names were hand written on the ledger and later interpreted as Kindermann. Those taking the names of passengers upon boarding the ship spelled their name phonetically as it was pronounced to them by Joseph and Regina. The area of Prussia where Joseph lived was Vogtlandkreis and is now near the border of the Czech Republic. The Hindermann’s would have had an eastern European accent that could have made them hard to understand as they spoke. Joseph and Regina were listed as both being 33 years old when in fact Joseph was 25 and Regina was 34, their two children traveled with them Karl who was 7 years old and Anna Maria “Mary” was only 2. As poor farmers, they traveled as steerage and were deemed so insignificant that the true details of their life were recorded indiscriminately. They traveled north along the Mississippi River by steamboat until they came to the port of Dubuque Iowa where they crossed the river and arrived in Paris Township Wisconsin. After arriving in the United States, they gave birth to two more children in Wisconsin: Katherine in 1860 and Valentine in 1863. Katherine Hindermann married John Orrin Montag and they moved to Iowa and had 12 children. Valentine Hindermann married Mary Magdelena Lena Thor and they had 10 children. Those who remember Valentine recall he had a wooden leg and lived in Dickeyville. Anna Maria Mary Hindermann married Bernard Wagner, she was his second wife. Bernard Wagner’s first wife Margaret Hugo died in 1878 and he married Mary in 1879, she raised 2 step children and had no children of her own. Karl Hindermann married Louisa Wagner from Kieler and they had 9 children. If anyone has family information I will gladly accept it. Ive looked at census records and other records, but Ive found they are not 100% accurate. Think for two poor German farmers, Joseph and Regina didnt do too bad for themselves. Look at the legacy they have left behind!
