Hello, Everyone! Quita and I shared our concerns about deaf blind issues with you. Please check this out. After that, you can share this video to everyone. Thank you for taking your time to watch our video! HERE IS THE TRANSCRIPT! Video image information: Two Black young women sitting outdoors. LaQuita (Quita) is wearing a black tee and Kevlasha (Kevi) has an orange long-sleeved buttoned shirt. Both have on large silver hoops. Kevlasha: Hello everyone! My name is Kevlasha (Kevi) –sign name is K L by eye—and I am DeafBlind. LaQuita: My name is LaQuita (Quita) –name sign is ILY handshape with index finger wiggling- and I am DeafBlind. Kevi: The reason why we created this v log is because we have some concern about some of the issues relating with deaf blind which we will now share. Quita: I want to explain what happen. Here is one of an example. I usually go to volunteer many different events, whether its for hearing community or deaf community. Im always willing to help with anything. With this one, I went to the deaf community. I was eager to help these people. I already informed the person who was responsible for it that I was deaf blind. The person acknowledged it and told me to go for it. One or two weeks, month or whatever... it doesnt really matter how much time passed. I later found out that my name wasnt even enlisted. Most of the positions was already taken and they began to proceed with it. Baffled, I asked about it and they apologized, saying that it meant that I didnt have to work. All that was important is to keep an eye out. I felt hurt. I didnt understand because their quote is, Dont assume. Ask. They were unsure what to do with deaf blind. They should of asked what I needed to match my need. It would look good and not only that but also benefit both of us. However, they didnt do that. They assumed. Kevi: Like she said... please do not assume. One of my experience is related to different event. We did met with them and informed them that we were deaf blind. They acknowledged it and even called us to make an appointment to discuss about which options is best to match our need. We told them all necessary informations. What happened few days later? I will say that we found out that all we would be doing is to just stand by the door and pass out informations. Thats all? Ridiculous. They belittled us. Dont do it like that. I suggest you to match our need instead of assuming. Whats important is that you to ask us if we felt comfortable to walk around in crowd, passing out information at the door. Some people prefer easy work but there are some who prefer hard work. Communication is important. Quita: Her story is all about, Dont assume. This apply to everyone. Lets compare. A deaf person want to work with hearing people. He want to work in the shop and is brilliant with accounting. He could be good working at the cashier since its related with money. He eventually get hired after being interviewed. He is very excited, not knowing which position he would be working at. Arriving at work, he would be hoping to work at the cashier only to find out that he is stocker instead. Belittled, he argue that he is capable of doing better. The boss then argue that he is not able to hear only to be told that he is able to see and his body function fine. His mind also run fine. The deaf person felt belittled and insulted. This is the same case with deaf blind. Deaf blind are often belittled because people freak out by saying they are not able to see. This is the reason why we felt that people need to stop assuming. Please ask them which does not hurt you. They would feel important. This apply to everyone: deaf, blind or with DA. They would feel important if asked. If not then they would feel hurt as well. Kevi: Her message? Do not assume. ASK! I will add another story to compare. Let me ask you a question. Are all deaf people same? Do they all have lack of hearing? Not true. All deaf people have different level of hearing. Some deaf are completely deaf and some can hear little, some can talk and some are oral. Some can sign little or a lot, some wear cochlear implant. There are so many differences including hard-of-hearing. It is completely diversity. This is the same case with deaf blind people. Do not assume that every of them are the same. Do not think they all have limited visual, unable to see at night, lack of balance or need to sign underneath their hand. There is more than that and every of them are different. For an example, some have different size of visual space. Some sight are blurred either close or far away. Some prefer to sign underneath hand or one on one. Some like to sign small or sign big. They can have different preferences with clothing, color and background. The list goes on. The whole point is not all deaf blind people are the same. Please do not judge by assuming deaf blinds visual. Thank you. Quita: Thank you. Now our messages purpose is what? To educate you. Were not aggressively approaching you in any way. Whats important to us is that you understand our feeling. We hope that you would understand our message. Thank you. Kevi: Please share our story to educate others to help support and improve our deaf community, not only at Gallaudet University but for other schools as well. Thank you. Quita: Share them. Thank you! Love you! — con Quita Carroll.
