Hello Friends, I had a chance to enter the fray of the Beer - TopicsExpress

Hello Friends, I had a chance to enter the fray of the Beer Store discussion today with the CBC. I gave some pretty candid answers and pointed out I havent been in a Beer Store in years, and as a craft beer drinker, have little reason to ever go into one. The LCBO does a good job of selling Ontario Craft Beer but the truth is, margins are slim, for both the brewers and the LCBO (they were designed to move liquor - not beer), and shelf space is limited. There needs to be another outlet for craft brewers to sell their beer in this province. Under the current system, most craft brewers make ends meet simply by selling direct from the brewery (where profit margins are highest) and through draft sales to bars. The LCBO is currently the only realistic and attainable retail option for small brewers in Ontario but there simply isnt enough shelf space to keep up with the long term growth of the Ontario craft beer segment (notably, many years behind the rest of North America). The Beer Store will never be a viable option for small craft brewers or craft beer drinkers. The fact that they would even make this token gesture is only a good sign to be optimistic that things are soon to change for the better. Cheers!
