Hello Friends, Well, its that time again! Time for the Bard Center for Environmental Policys Plunge for People and Planet (P4P2)! This Sunday, March 2nd the first year class of graduate students – and any other willing jumpers – will take an icy plunge into the Parliament of Reality on campus in honor of their dedication to improving the sustainability our planet. Though I will not be taking the icy plunge myself, I am participating in spirit by raising money for a first year graduate student named Ashley Westgate. Ashley will fulfill her internship requirement by serving in the Peace Corps with the Coastal Resource Management (CRM) project in the Philippines. The goal of the CRM is to assist coastal communities in improving coastal and marine ecosystem productivity, restore the profitability of fisheries, and ensure food security through integrated coastal management. Because Ashley is interested in bottom up community involvement in the mitigation and adaptation to climate change, she is excited to apply her first year of coursework to her position. She hopes to explore how communities are and can be further incorporated into coastal management solutions as the climate changes and presents difficulty to the coastal populations. This two year period will not only offer Ashely an amazing cultural experience and a chance to make an impact in the developing world, it will also help Ashley in her professional development.
