Hello Friends! You know what really burns me up? FIRE!!! On slow library computer right now, but wanna let ppl know we are OK. Were a little banged up (Deniz has cuts and bruises, I have a minor hand fracture and a sore leg) from jumping out a second story window late Tues night during a three alarm fire at 85 Floral Ave, an apartment bldg in Johnson City. At 3:30 am, we were awakened by a neighbor lady under my window screaming my name, but when I opened the door, there was a wall of dark grey smoke from ceiling to floor. When I closed the door, the smoke started coming in through the cracks. We called 911, told them we were in the upstairs corner apt and couldnt get out, they told us to jump out the bedroom window and they would catch us (sort of) so we did. They got Deniz OK, me they dropped. They dont call me Bigfoot for nothing! It was pouring rain and chaos, as residents looked for their neighbors, etc. Two ppl were taken away immediately in ambulances. We took refuge under a balcony next door and ended up doing a TV interview w WBNG-12 and Time Warner News. After that, three of us realized we prolly needed to be checked out too, so we drove to Lourdes hospital. While waiting for X-ray results, we were watching the news coverage of the fire, the interview, all of it. Talk about surreal! We couldnt believe we had just been through all that, felt like a bad dream, that it didnt really happen~ But like everything else in this string of incredibly bad luck weve experienced the last two weeks, it did. The eqpt theft, the other hassles, all small potatoes when faced with a life or death situation like this. One reporter was right on when he said many ppls lives were endangered. Had that neighbor not kept screaming my name, maybe Deniz and I dont ever wake up. It was, as another neighbor said in Thurs paper, very scary. It was also apparently arson, starting in the middle stairwell. Over 60 ppl are left homeless by a crime that couldve easily been a multiple homicide. I hope they catch the person who stole some of my drum eqpt, but Im sure we all really hope and expect that they catch this dangerous idiot.
