Hello, I’m Helen Hegener. Retiring after a 30-year career as co-publisher and managing editor of a national magazine, I founded Northern Light Media, an Alaskan multi-media company, in 2007. The Northern Light Media logo is a stained glass dogteam which graced The Arctic Club in Seattle around the turn of the century; it highlights the colorful history and partnership of sled dogs and their mushers, and the concept of light shining through the glass to illuminate the scene nicely underscores the company name: Northern Light. Through Northern Light Media, I write and publish nonfiction books about sled dog racing and the history of Alaska. Titles currently in print are The All Alaska Sweepstakes, Yukon Quest Album, Along Alaskan Trails, Long Hard Trails and Sled Dog Tales, The Stained Glass Dog Team, The Matanuska Colony Barns, The Beautiful Matanuska Valley, The 1935 Matanuska Colony Project, and The Matanuska Colony Album. I co-produced a documentary DVD, Appetite & Attitude, about four-time Iditarod & Yukon Quest Champion Lance Mackey, and I was the producer for another DVD focusing on the barns of the 1935 Matanuska Colony Project. I have planned and managed two Mushing History Conferences, in 2009 and 2010, which drew speakers and attendees from Canada and Outside. A third Mushing History conference is in the planning stages. I have built and maintained websites for national organizations, publishing companies, research projects, and three sled dog races: the Northern Lights 300, Top of the World 350, and the Copper Basin 300.
