Hello, The Penn State GSA (Graduate Student Association) - TopicsExpress

Hello, The Penn State GSA (Graduate Student Association) announced in a mass email on February 25, 2014 that the student health insurance plan will likely see increases in costs and decreases in benefits next year. If the university keeps subsidies at the same rate, yearly premiums will increase by $156 for an individual, $594 for a spouse or partner, and $1,106 for a family. For unsubsidized students, premiums will rise by $783, $1,981, and $3,905 respectively. Additional changes would include an increase in the deductible from the current $75 to $250 for an individual, and a new emergency room co-pay of $150 (currently, there is none). Moreover, in-network procedures outside of University Health Services will only be 90% covered, rather than the current 100%. In other words, if you needed a special procedure that cost $5,000, you would pay $500 out of pocket. We are a group of concerned students who would like to collect more information about the potential effects of these changes on students’ lives in the coming academic year.
