As a consequence Camillus grew up neglected. He joined the Venetian army while still only a youth. After his regiment was disbanded in 1574, he worked in a hospital for patients suffering from incurables diseases His aggressive nature and excessive gambling led to his dismissal. He later rejoined the Venetian army and fought in a war against the Turks. After the war he returned to the hospital in Rome from which he had been dismissed, he became a nurse and later director of the hospital. Camillus established the Order of Clerks Regular Ministers to the Sick, better known as Camillians. His experience in wars led him to establish a group of health care workers who would assist soldiers on the battlefield. The Red Cross on their cassock remains a symbol of the order today. Members also devoted themselves to the plague-stricken. Saint Camillus was so distressed at how hopeless plague cases were treated during his time that he formed the Brothers of the Happy Death, for plague victims. It was for the efforts of the Brothers and his alleged supernatural healings that the people of Rome credited Camillus with ridding the city of a certain plague and, for a time, Camillus became known as the Patron Saint of Rome. In 1594, Camillus also led his friars to Milan where they attended to the sick of the Ca Granda, the main hospital of the city. Throughout his life Brother Camillus ailments caused him suffering, but he allowed no one to wait on him and he would crawl to visit the sick when he was unable to stand and walk. It is said that Brother Camillus possessed the gifts of healing and prophecy. He died July 14, 1614 (aged 64) in Rome He was beatified given the decree of heroic virtues and declared as Blessed Camillus in 1742, by Pope Benedict XIV (who was the 247th Bishop of Rome and Head of the Catholic Church since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) He was canonized and pronounced as Saint Camillus de Lellis (4 years later) in 1746 also by Pope Benedict XIV (who was the 247th Vicar of Christ since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) His mortal remains are located in the altar in the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene, Rome, Italy, along with several of his relics. ------------------------------------------- Quote of the day Our Lord Jesus Christ spoke to Brother Camillus from a Crucifix… Catholic History confirms that Christ who is present in the Crucifix spoke to Camillus, and asked him, Why are you afraid? Do you not realize that this is not your work but mine? This words of Jesus Christ has become the motto associated with Saint Camillus, as well as all the healthcare workers who were inspired by him. ------------------------------------------------------------- Other Catholic Missionaries who are inspired by the work of Saint Camillus were: • The Congregation of the Servants of the Sick of Saint Camillus, • the Daughters of Saint Camillus, • the Secular Institutes of Missionaries of the Sick Christ Our Hope, of the Kamillianische Schwestern and of the Lay Camillian Family, were born later of the charism and spirituality of Saint Camillus. Saint Camillus feast day was originally inserted in the Roman Calendar in 1762 for celebration on 18 July, since 14 July, the day of his death, was at that time taken up with the feast of Saint Bonaventure. The Feast of Saint Camillus was then given the rank of Double Feast The Feast Day was later changed in 1962 to that of Third-Class Feast by Pope Blessed John XXIII (who was the 261st Bishop of Rome since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) In 1969, the feast day was changed to that of an obligatory Memorial, by Venerable Pope Paul VI (who was the 262nd Servant of God since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) -------------------------------------------------------- Saint Camillus, you lived in faith and in fidelity to Our Lord Jesus Christ despite the many trials of your own life. In your compassion for the poor and the sick, you were a clear sign that God lives and cares. In our troubled times, many live as if God were dead or absent. We pray you to share with us your faith in the Person of Jesus. Even if we falter and are weak ourselves, through you, we pray Jesus to grant us a faith that is expressed in good works and in faithfulness to his saving will. We also ask you to present this petition to God, Our Father… For this we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen. --------------------------------------------------------- Saint Camillus is the universal patron saint of the sick He is also the patron saint of hospitals He is the patron saint of nurses He is also the patron Saint of Medical Doctors Saint Camillus is invoked by Catholics against addiction to gambling --------------------------------------------------------- Let us pray (Oremus) Most merciful Father, in many ways you have shown your love and care to your people, especially to the poor and the sick.
