The Dominican Order popularly known as the Dominicans was founded by Saint Dominic of Guzman whose feast we celebrated on the 8th of August Saint Dominic of Silos was born to a family of peasants. He was born year 1000, in Cañas (modern Rioja), Spain He worked as a shepherd before becoming a Benedictine monk at the monastery of San Millán de Cogolla. He became novice master at the monastery Dominic of Silos, with two of his fellow monks were driven out by the King of Navarre, who wished to annex the monasterys lands. Under the protection of King Ferdinand I of León, they found refuge at the monastery later named after him. They established a new monastery in what at first seemed an unpromising location. Under Dominic’s leadership, however, it became one of the most famous houses in Spain. Many healings were reported there. Dominic rebuilt the monastery, both spiritually and physically, and turned it into a center of book design, gold and silver work, scholarship, and charity. The monastery became one of the centers of the Mozarabic liturgy, and also preserved the Visigothic script of ancient Spain. Wealthy patrons endowed the monastery, and Saint Dominic raised funds to ransom Christians taken prisoner by the Moors. Saint Dominic of Silos died of natural causes in 1073. He died on the 20th of December, 1073 in Silos His relics were translated to the monastery church at Silos on January 5, 1076. Churches and monasteries were dedicated to him as early as 1085. His special patronage was connected with pregnancy, and before 1931, his abbatial staff was used to bless Spanish queens and kept by their beds when they were in labor. --------------------------------------------------------- History tells that the mother of (founder of the Dominican order) is said to have prayed at the shrine of Dominic of Silos before she conceived the child that would subsequently found the Order of Preachers! The Catholic Tradition tells us that about 100 years after Dominic’s death, a young woman made a pilgrimage to his tomb. There Saint Dominic of Silos appeared to her and assured her that she would bear another son. The woman’s name was Joan of Aza, and the son she bore was Saint Dominic of Guzmán who grew up to be the other Dominic—the one who founded the ‘Order of Preachers’ popularly known as the Dominicans. Saint Dominic of Guzmán introduced the world to the devotion to the Most Holy Rosary after an apparition of the ever Blessed Virgin Mary --------------------------------------------- Saint Dominic of Silos is invoked against rabies and against rabid dogs He is also invoked against insects He is the patron Saint of captives He is popularly known as the patron Saint of pregnant women He is the patron saint of prisoners He is also the patron saint of shepherds -------------------------------------- Let us pray that through the works, spiritual direction, spiritual maturity and intercession of Saint Dominic of Silos, we may in this group find the spiritual motivation to win our souls for God.
