Hello dear colleagues, - - TopicsExpress

Hello dear colleagues, - I was called by a headmaster to substitute a teacher who committed a mistake due to which he was fired! Thus, some students displayed their total refuse to share the classroom learning. They all the time tried to disturb the class and make trouble so as to stop the flow of the course. By the way, its a common core class, students aged between 14 and 16 ! Well, having 36 year of experience in different cycles I managed to calm down the class by talking to the trouble makers one by one out of the classroom. I talked to them alone far from their classmates and started a friendly conversation about their ex teacher! First of all I found out that he was a very young teacher who has just started teaching; second year, was very nice as most of them told me! Two of them asked for his phone number to call him to come back! Moreover, one of them told me that the problem was not my presence among them but they were angry against the headmaster who fired their beloved teacher! I was the victim of these questionable situation. Thus, I explained to them I did not even know their ex teacher and had nothing to do with this awkward situation. I added that I was there to teach something I have been teaching for 36 years! I even pinpointed that I still teach and have never had any problem with my students. Of course, my way of teaching is different from your ex teacher but thats the way I teach. However, some of them were sure that their ex teacher would come back and would continue enjoying learning with him! Here I had understood that these students were victims too! They were used to a certain way of teaching with their ex teacher and suddenly everything was up side down! They were lost! Their filter of anxiety was high and their filter of learning was very low! Thus, the most damaged domain was the emotional one! In this case I started manging the emotional domain by establishing a friendly relation with them! But an event occurred and made things a little bit difficult to manage! In fact, I received an administrative paper which asked me to get two grades to complete the number of the first semester. The first grade concerned a written test and the second the class activities! It was awkward for me to test these kids who had been in a psychological bad state. Thus, I gave them a team work about Character Education. I divided the class into six groups and gave each group the task to deal with the following traits: Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, Trustworthiness and Citizenship. Then, I told them that every group is going to write the Definition,Synonyms, Antonyms, Illustration and give a logo to the given Traits. Afterwards, I would test them orally on the part he/she undertook in the preparation of the task! Thus, I got my two grades, establish a new class dynamism and get involved in motivating and building their lost learning filter!( To be continued for any request) Thank you for sharing and caring, Prof. Bouhaib Zahawi; Morocco
