Hello everyone, As you may be aware, I am heading up a campaign to “green” our school campus. One of the main areas on which I have placed my focus is the school garden. Nearly a dozen parents have showed up on several occasions to clean up the garden – remove old debris and straighten up the tools and other areas. We have received several grants/donations from LAUSD and other organizations including the following: · We have been approved to receive a new truckload of wood chips that we will use to straighten and even out the garden pathways. This will likely happen next week. · LAUSD approved our request to upgrade our sprinkler system – they installed new lines, new sprinkler heads, an electrical system – and now the entire garden will be maintained on weekends and during the breaks. (This was a $10,000-12,000 project that was allocated to us free of charge.) · We received a grant of more than 100 organic seed packets for vegetables, herbs, lettuces and fruits from Organic Seed Grow. · Four more teachers want to incorporate a weekly garden class into their curriculum starting in mid-February – bringing our total to six classes who will use the garden. · We have started a partnership with Captain Planet Foundation and have begun receiving weekly lessons using gardening to teach biology, ecology, botany and other earth sciences. We have also applied for a grant to upgrade certain aspects of our garden and to install a secondary (smaller) garden in the Kinderyard this fall so that our littlest ones will soon be gardening as well. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO HELP WITH THIS PROGRAM! Please forward to everyone at Rosewood to let them know what we are doing and ask them to get involved. We really need 3-5 more weekly volunteers to assist the teachers in the garden classes – ESPECIALLY FOR Ms. Fales, Mr. Castillo and Ms. Oasay classes! But we also need a CORE GARDEN VOLUNTEER GROUP OF PARENTS/FAMILY MEMBERS to assist in maintaining the garden and coming up with new ideas for our garden classes.
