Hello everyone. Landed safely in Berlin. LOVE this city. Spent about 4 hours walking around and experienced a cocktail of emotion. Whilst obviously excited about eating chocolate and drinking wine again soon (oh and theres that race as well!!), the photos below are, a piece of the Berlin Wall, Brandenberg Gate 200m from the finish line and theres me at Checkpoint Charlie. I went into the museum at Checkpoint Charlie which has a detailed history of the 28 years the wall stood. Imagine being walled into your suburb cut off from the people you love on the other side and then be dictated to what you can do, when and with who for 28 years! Approx 1000 died trying to get to the west side. Coming from the east side there was a 2m wall followed by death strip, made up of barbed wire fence, sends off an alarm at a touch, this is then followed by a grassy strip filled with iron spikes that would rip your feet apart, followed by another grass strip filled with land mines and if thats not enough you then get to the real Berlin Wall, 3.6m hight reinforced concrete and when you get within a metre of it from the east there unmanned guns are set off to seal your fate. Its also guarded 24hrs per day! What these people went through and walking the very streets where people were killed for wanting to be free to be with who they love is beyond heart wrenching. I love my life. We all have it so good dont we? Love to you all....2 days to go.
