Mills has degrees in literature from the University of Chicago (B.A.), University of New Mexico (M.A.), and UC Davis (Ph.D.) and holds the Susan Burress Wall Distinguished Professorship in the Humanities at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. He has published poetry, fiction, drama, and criticism. Jan Van Stavern says of Mills’ poetry: It is purely original and (like the poet describing memory through a vintage of wine) has notes of Charles Wright and Pablo Neruda in its own particular savor.
