Hello fellow BCGSSW Students! Let me introduce myself: I am a final year student and in the Clinical Mental Health concentration. I have talked a few students over the past couple of years (Im a part time student) and Ive noticed something that has been lacking in our curriculum is some sort of support group for each other as we go through social work school. I have two ideas. One is that we create a group as students that meets every week. During that confidential group, we can talk about what is hard about school, what is hard about our lives, our field placements etc. I feel like as we learn to give therapy to others, why not give therapy to each other! The second idea stems from the fact that I have a mental health history and that is what brought me into social work school. After talking to some of you, I know that is true about some of you too! Sometimes I feel like this school is a supportive place and acknowledges that Social Workers come from many different backgrounds but I also feel like it there can be a lot of feelings that stem from switching seats in the therapy room, as it were. I would love a support group for this demographic as well. So. Next Thursday October 9th, at 1pm I would like to have a preliminary meeting to see if there is any interest and also get some allies and help around starting this group. I think it would be good to meet in the lounge and we can move elsewhere if we need to. If you cant make the meeting and are interested you can email me at my last name at bc.edu. Also please email me if you have any questions or thoughts and please share this!
