Hello from AFSCME Local 783. I am submitting the same questions to both John Connolly and Marty Walsh in hopes to clarify some questions our members have regarding the upcoming election. Please feel free to answer or disregard this message. My name is Jay Belmore, E-Board member and union steward. I work for the City of Boston, and my number is 202-280-8128 if you wish to contact me. Thank you. 1. It has been said, even by those within labor that many unions continue to operate under antiquated business models. In order to remain relevant, what role do you feel labor unions should be playing in the lives of their members in the 21st Century? 2. Boston has always been known as the city of neighborhoods. Jane Jacobs, writer and urban activist wrote, “A city’s very wholeness in bringing together people with communities of interest is one of its greatest assets, possibly the greatest.” Do you believe that a better job can be done at bringing together the city’s various communities for the benefit of all? If so how? 3. Boston’s economy has faired better than average through the latest economic downturn, however the disparity between the haves and have-nots continues to grow. What will you do if elected, to promote fairness, equity, and equality for all Bostonians? 4. Do you believe the current mayor has gone too far, or not far enough when it comes to newly adopted environmental policies and initiatives? What, if anything, will you do differently? What won’t you change?
