Hello, my name is Johan Peter Jønsson. I study Documentary Photography at University of South Wales in Newport. I’m originally from Denmark however I have chosen to carry out my studies abroad. Recently, better rights for people who realise they are transgender have been a big topic in Danish news, since it was broad to the public’s attention that being transgender is still considered a mental disease. I find it appalling and this is how the issue got my attention. I am about to start my major photographic project to end my studies here, and I would therefor be very interested in portraying, through a series of images, what it means to be transgender and the complex feelings and inner conciliation I imagine could be interesting trying to depict. At the same time it will also be a learning experience for me, looking at a gender deserving a bit more awareness. I am interested in the concept of identity and what makes an identity. I will translate it in to photography by making a double portrait displaying two different sides of you, one comfortable and one uncomfortable. In addition I would like to photograph family album pictures of you and do an interview explaining your story and your understanding of your own identity. My aim is to present you as an individual with vulnerability but also a strong character. The work will first and foremost be for my graduation at university, however I can see it work within a wider context, creating awareness towards greater understanding of the complex matters involved.
