Help us establish The Michael Soles Football Award Over the past few weeks I’ve been working with a committee of former teammates from the 1987 McGill Redmen Football team to create an endowment at McGill. The endowment will enable us to fund an annual award as a tribute to great friend and former Redmen football great, Mike Soles, who’s been living with ALS (aka “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”) for the last9 years. Our goal is to raise $80,000.00 by November 15th and announce the creation of The Michael Soles Football Award in the week prior to the 50th Vanier Cup, which is being played on Saturday, November 29th at Molson Stadium in Montreal. The Michael Soles Football Award will promote the McGill Redmen football program by providing direct funding in the form of renewable annual awards (likely $3,000 to $5,000 per year) to active members of the team in good academic standing. The recipients will be selected by the McGill Athletics Board Awards Committee. Why should you help? Here are two reasons I can think of: 1) You are a friend, family member, coach or former teammate of Mike’s and want to be a part of something special for him – a fitting tribute to a courageous and beloved family man and buddy who has been valiantly dealing with ALS in private until very recently. 2) You are touched by this story and want to contribute to a cause that is dear to Mike – the football experience. At its very best, football manifests itself in efforts like this. We learn to pull together for a cause on the field and put those life lessons to work in our community. This award will help deserving student athletes obtain a McGill education and round that out with a transformative team experience, helping to create tomorrows leaders.
