Helped a friend today in identifying the source of noise in his digital recording studio set up. I don't have a lot of hands-on experience with this type of equipment but I have a lot of experience as an engineer and the ins and outs of a different technology are quickly learned. Noisy cables were the main problem (and they were supposed to be good ones) but he has Manley stereo equalizer which uses valves and he tells me it is a wonderful bit of kit that gives that bit of valve warmth to the recording. It uses US produced valves, Raytheon and GE 6414 (a high spec variant of 12AT7/ECC81)and JAN spec 12AU7 (US military spec). Be warned though, all US made valves date back to pre 1980 and are therefore NOS (new old stock). There are unscrupulous people out there who buy up clapped out valves, remark them and sell them as NOS for silly money; caveat emptor, let the buyer beware. New valves are made in Russia, Slovakia, Serbia and China and European valves have to be the first choice.
