Helpful information from our equine nutritionist: Fats are excellent sources of energy. On a pound for pound basis, fat provides approximately three times as much energy as oats and two and one-half times as much energy as corn. Adding fat to the diet allows the horse to ingest more calories in a smaller quantity of feed, which helps prevent some digestive disturbances. Further, research has shown that adding fat to the diets of performance horses may improve performance, such as increased stamina and delayed onset of fatigue. Remember when making any changes to your horse’s diet it should be done gradually and adding fat to the diet is no exception. Gradually introduce new feed or forage over a 10 to 14 day period.
