Helpful photography tip: If you want the most accurate exposure - TopicsExpress

Helpful photography tip: If you want the most accurate exposure reading for a shot, it will be obtained by using a handheld light meter used at the subjects actual position. Using the white dome attachment (or studio flash attachment) will give you the reading for the light falling on the subject (incident reading), which will yield the most precise, scene averaged reading. If you use the meter without the dome, or use your in-camera meter, you are reading reflected light, which can vary the reading greatly by high or low reflectance of colors and surfaces. The in-camera meters can be set to use different patterns to generate their readings, including spot, center weighted towards the middle of the frame, scene averaged, etc. The different in-camera modes let you expose for a specific portion of your image, or averaged by a particular pattern of sensing points. Remember that light meters try to make everything 18% grey, so if you expose for a shadow point, that shadow will be what the meter is trying to calculate for. This is why exposing for sand or snow with an in-camera meter can be very problematic. Some cameras software is better at dealing with these factors than others, so practice with your camera under various conditions to determine what works best. If you dont have a handheld meter, or a handheld is not practical because you cant get to your subjects spot, youll want to have a good idea how your in-camera meter performs.
