Helping to save lives…Earlier this year, CSO Amanda Yung from Abergavenny Neighbourhood Team arranged for Des Hughes, First Responder for South Wales Ambulance service to go along to the Ysbyty Fields Neighbourhood Watch meeting to demonstrate how to use a defibrillator and talk about their life saving benefits. As a result of his demonstration, the Watch has joined together to raise funds and install a defibrillator on the estate. These simple-to-use units are based on computer technology which is designed to analyse the heart rhythm itself, and then advise the user whether a shock is required. They are designed to be used by lay people, who require little training to operate them correctly. Wendy Wilson, Treasurer of Ysbyty Fields Neighbourhood Watch said, ‘Thank you to everyone that donated and contributed to help us buy this Automated External Defibrillator and external box for the estate. This includes Bryn Yr Cwm area committee who made a donation to help towards the cost of the box and insurance. ‘I’m pleased to say it is now up and working after a few teething issues about where to locate the defibrillator. I would also like to thank Des Hughes and James Gough from the South Wales Ambulance Service for all their help in giving us some training.’ Abergavenny has three other defibrillators in and around the town which can be found in Wilkinson Cibi Walk, The Market Hall and the Angel Hotel. If you would like more information about how to use a defibrillator and basic First Aid, please contact your local St Johns Ambulance or South Wales Ambulance service.
