Henry Herald Man accused of killing pregnant girlfriend Story by Kathy Jefcoats Wednesday, August 13, 2014 MCDONOUGH — Henry County jurors heard from the emotional mother of a pregnant woman who died in 2012 after being hit by a truck. Susan Pope identified a poster-sized photo of her only daughter, Meghann Pope, as the states first witness in the case against Brian Mack Feltman, 29. Feltman and Pope lived together and she was expecting their first child when she died Aug.19, 2012. Henry County police said Feltman was driving the truck that killed Pope. Feltman denied hitting her and told police he found her in the road inside their Heron Bay subdivision. She was very excited to be expecting her first child, said Pope. Pope said the couple had planned a gender reveal party but her daughter died the week before it could happen. An ultrasound showed they were expecting a girl they wanted to name Talia, said defense attorney Ricky Morris. In his opening statement, Morris told jurors that there is evidence Feltman was driving on the wrong side of the road and could only be guilty of second degree vehicular homicide. He said Pope was in the middle of the road when she was hit. She was mad, she was going to confront him, said Morris. How unfortunate that her anger at Brian caused her her life and Talias life, too. Witness statements showed the couple attended a birthday barbecue the night of Aug.18 but had argued. Pope went home but Feltman continued visiting with friends, who lived in a neighboring subdivision, said Morris. Morris theorized that Pope left their home on foot to walk to the friends house. There were sidewalks on each side of the roadway, he said, but she ended up in the street where she was hit. There were no witnesses to the collision. Feltman gave conflicting accounts as to what happened. He told police he found Pope in the road and didnt know what happened and later told police he was driving, heard a thump but didnt know what it was. But crime scene technicians found Popes blood on the hood of the truck Feltman was driving and there was damage to the front grille. After Susan Pope left the stand, Assistant District Attorey Arkesia Jenkins called the 911 operator who took Feltmans call at 6:35 a.m. Aug. 19. Jenkins played the recording of the call for jurors. Feltman was so distraught, he couldnt be fully understood as he screamed for medical help for Pope, Shes going to die if you dont hurry. When the operator tells Feltman to comfort Pope, he can be heard doing just that. Help is on the way, baby, help is on the way, he said. Stay with me, stay with me. Youre OK, its OK. In the background, Popes moaning can also be heard during the call. Her mother and other relatives were emotional as they sat in Henry County Superior Court during the playback. At one point, Susan Pope briefly left the courtroom. Meghann Pope was taken to the hospital in Spalding County where she died. Henry County District Attorney Jim Wright said he expects the states case to last through Friday. Morris said he expects to begin presenting his case Monday. If convicted of murder, Feltman faces a mandatory minimum sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole. Check henryherald or pick up a copy of Fridays Henry Herald for updates.
