Here are my priorities for Hamtramck Public Schools. What do you think? And please share them with your networks! Opportunity for all students. We will expand dual enrollment choices for our high school students so they can graduate with college credits, and we will create a bilingual certification program so that our student’s skills can be recognized in college and careers. Access for all parents. Our district needs a language access plan so all parents can get the information they need about their children’s education in a language they understand. We also need to create space for parents to be involved in the operations of the schools. Youth voice. District leaders need structural mechanisms for understanding the perspective of student’s. And what better way than for them to BE the district leaders? Comprehensive leadership development and decision making positions are needed. Transformational learning. School is as much about academics as it is about identity development and understanding the world around you. We need instructors and instruction that recognize this, and seek to help students become more full human beings, not better test takers. Expanded community partnerships. We will continue to aggressively pursue community partnerships that help boost academic achievement, build leadership skills, renovate our facilities, and attract the resources to make schools more like community centers. Responsible steward of the public trust. I will work closely with our Superintendent and Finance Director to make sure our tax dollars are spent wisely. Equity for our district. I will work with allies everywhere to fight for public education throughout Michigan, reform the school funding model, and stop the expansion of unaccountable charter schools. #majormoves2014
