Here are some of the highlights of my Alaskan vacation. Took the shuttle bus 85 miles into Denali NP to Wonder Lake. Camped 2 nights there. Worst mosquitoes I’ve ever seen. Drove along Chena Hot Springs Road near Fairbanks and saw 13 moose in 2 days. We were as close as about 40 feet. They are HUGE! Went on a 4 hour glacier cruise out of Whittier and saw humpback whales, sea otters, stellar sea lions and glaciers calving. Flew in a float plane to Katmai National Park, camped 2 nights at Brooks Camp. Oh saw a few brown bears there, too. Obviously this was the highlight of my trip as I’d planned it for years. Joined the wife for our cruise south to Vancouver. Learned glassblowing in Skagway, AK…..VERY COOL! Went up in the Space Needle. Met a guy riding a motorcycle around Alaska; he was from Denver. He was recently divorced and quit his job to “find himself again.” Met a German couple who were planning to ride bicycles from Talkeetna, AK to Haines, AK (800 or so miles), in about 4 weeks, camping along the way. Met a guy at Wonder Lake Campground who was a consultant at MasterCard in O’ Fallon several years ago. Small world. Met a couple of guys from MN and learned that people from South Dakota are referred to as “SoDackers.” I liked that and repeated it many times J Met an emergency room physician from southern California who showed me some iPhone pics of his African safari. Awesome photos. Chatted with an NFL photographer while photographing the bears. I had lens envy, not to mention job envy. 11 days on land, 7 days on the cruise and 1 day in Seattle. Great vacation.
