Here are some tips to help reduce stress. If you want to Google each tip you can find research backing it up. Some of these things are my own methods so I’m not sure if they’ve been researched yet. I don’t cut the grass, but I love the fresh smell of cut grass. I’ve been drinking orange juice for years and a study that came out this week shows that the vitamin C in orange juice is a stress-reliever. Write and then throw the paper away or delete the file from your computer. Drink a glass of lavender tea w/ honey. There are lots of articles explaining the positive impact of lavender on the body and mind. Go to the gym and spend an 30 minutes on an elliptical. I do an hour when I go, but that’s just me. Watch communities. YouTube a fun song. Dance even though you might not think you are good at it. Sing out loud with the music up! Take a walk. Go swimming. Take a bubble bath. Go for a run. When I do this I’ll take a guide with me so I don’t accidently run into something. Talk to a friend. Make a to-do list to get your daily/weekly/long-term tasks out of your mind and onto paper. Talk out the situation to yourself if you are alone and you do better thinking out loud. Many of us think out loud to formulate our thoughts/actions. Take a nap. I know if one of my friends tells me that I need a nap it’s there way of telling me that I’m visibly stressed out. Take a long hot shower. Buy a new outfit, dress up, and get all made-up. Avoid people who might trigger stress. For example: people who constantly yell and scream to get their point across. Remind yourself to eat. Some of us get so wrapped up in our work that we forget to eat. This got so bad for me at one point that my friend would show up at my door with a big plate of food after I talked to her about it. Make a thankful for or gratitude list. This keeps me centered on my appreciations in life and puts any stress to the back of my mind so that I can manage it more effectively. Read uplifting books. For example: Chicken soup for the Soul. Remember to cry if you feel the need to. That’s extremely important for me as I tend to hold back. Get enough sleep each night. A lack of sleep when combined with stress poses health risks physically, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually. Release people who bring more harm than good to you. We can’t always do this in every situation, but take the control where you can. The most important tip is to laugh as much as humanly possible. I love hilarious people and I love being funny when I’m around the right people. We need to smile all of the time. -Nicki
