Here is Johnny Cash reciting the Robert Service poem The Cremation Of Sam McGhee" Robert Service died 55 years ago today. Though he was born in northern England and raised in Scotland, he spent most if his life as a man of letters in France, yet he was and is known as the "Bard Of The Yukon". He relocated to Hollywood during World War II (when Germany invaded France in World War II, Nazi soldiers came specifically to his home, looking for the poet who had mocked Hitler. He had narrowly given them the slip). In his early twenties, Service spent a short time in the Canadian west: in Vancouver pursuing a woman, living in Kamloops (hundreds of miles from anywhere in central northern British Columbia and near where I got a speeding ticket in 1990 from the only Royal Canadian Mounty around for hundreds of miles) and in Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory, where he worked in a frontier bank and wrote poetry.
