Here is a big eye opener for me and probably all you Mommies out there... I thought Aidens diet was pretty healthy for a kid. We dont eat a lot of junk food, fast food, soda, candy, etc... I try to keep it healthy and balanced. He is 2 1/2 years old and here is what he ate yesterday. A pretty normal day. B-Oatmeal cooked with milk and added flaxseeds and brown sugar and a small bite of egg whites with 1 cup of apple juice. Snacks throughout the day- wheat thins, pistachios, raisins, carrots and kix cereal. L-Some ground turkey, mandarin oranges canned in juice, pineapple canned in juice, and about 2 oz of milk. D-Chicken with some corn and rice. The rest of the day he drinks water. Not bad, right? When I added up his sugar intake, he was at 80 grams!!!! Just in the milk and juice he was at 40 grams! The rest mostly came from the canned fruit and raisins. I was shocked! A toddler should be eating 6-8 grams of sugar per day. Time to rethink his diet big time! The biggest factors are the liquids and they are such a waste of calories! This is what 80 grams of pure sugar looks like. Now, some of his sugar did come from fruit which is natural sugar and good for you but it was also canned in juice which pretty much adds all this.
