Here is a comparison of how much radiation comes from raw uranium ore vs. classic Fiesta Ware style glazes that I just did in our guest room (Yes, I am a proud geek). Note: unrefined uranium ore like this is test sample is nothing like the stuff which scares us in various ways. It would take millions of tons of it, processed in gigantic plants - to get it to the level where it is dangerous if not handled right. Those fiesta ware dishes I found at a tag sale, use a uranium oxide glaze, and were very popular dishes for 25+ years. I wouldnt want to sleep on a bed of that glaze for long, but again its pretty low level. However - its amazing how much MORE radioactive it is than uranium ore! There are lots of other sources around you, in your smoke detectors there is Americium-241, quite radioactive. Lots of coloured glasses, including some marbles. And, of course - *everything*, including you is radioactive. The question is HOW radioactive? We all our always bathed in radiation, like what comes from space. But we certainly dont want too much of some kinds of radiation.
