Here is a good reason to be careful about where you get the compost and manure that you use in your vegetable and flower gardens. Herbicides with clopyralid, picloram and aminopyralid in them can persist for years in compost and manures and can cause serious long term problems. One brand of herbicide sold locally in farm stores is known as Tordon. You want to be very leery of using them around your home and garden. These chemicals are designed to kill trees in pastures and will keep new ones from growing for years. All of our compost is composted at temperatures above 140 degrees and then aged for several years. We use it on all our landscape projects, in our vegetable garden and in our garlic field and have never had a single problem.
